Spinal cord contusions.

چکیده
What are the most common causes of spinal cord contusion? Most spinal cord contusion injuries are the result of highimpact motor vehicle accidents. However, athletes can sustain this injury as a result of contact while playing. Fortunately, the number of serious incidents involving spinal cord injury is low. That being said, more orthopedists are beginning to function as the team physician during athletic events. Therefore, it is important for physicians to be able to recognize the symptoms of cord contusion and differentiate them from brain concussion and peripheral nerve stingers.

PURPOSE To define the clinical and prognostic role of MR in a pediatric population with spinal cord injury. METHODS Fifteen children underwent MR 12 hours to 2 months postinjury using decoupled surface coils and ventilator support as needed. MR was correlated retrospectively with clinical, CT, and radiographic findings. RESULTS On MR, of seven children with spinal cord neurologic deficits, ...
متن کاملMRI findings in spinal cord penetrating injury: three case reports.
Stab wounds of the spinal canal are rare and constitute an uncommon cause of spinal cord injury. They are usually responsible for an immediate neurological deficit that requires emergency therapeutic management to minimize the extent of neurological deficit and to prevent further loss of neurological function. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to evaluate damage to the spinal cord, inclu...
متن کاملDiffusion tensor MR imaging in cervical spine trauma.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our aim was to investigate the extent and severity of changes in spinal cord diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters in patients with cervical cord injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS DTI was performed in 20 symptomatic patients (mean, 45.7 +/- 17.7 years of age; 2 women, 18 men) with cervical spine trauma and 8 volunteers (mean, 34.2 +/- 10.7 years of age; 6 men, 2 women)....

متن کاملA Consistent, Quantifiable, and Graded Rat Lumbosacral Spinal Cord Injury Model
The purpose of this study is to develop a rat lumbosacral spinal cord injury (SCI) model that causes consistent motoneuronal loss and behavior deficits. Most SCI models focus on the thoracic or cervical spinal cord. Lumbosacral SCI accounts for about one third of human SCI but no standardized lumbosacral model is available for evaluating therapies. Twenty-six adult female Sprague-Dawley rats we...
